Portmeirion, Wales

Portmeirion is a slice of Italy in the heart of Wales. It was built between 1925 and 1975. The architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who created the village, said he wanted to capture the atmosphere of the Mediterranean and he succeeded. Portmeirion is now a tourist village and most of the houses are hotels, gift shops and restaurants. Many of them were created as follies - pavilions whose sole purpose was to entertain guests. Every year, 250,000 tourists visit the village.
